The Social Democrats are nominating Tanel Kiik as a candidate for the Vice President of the Riigikogu. Their aim is to find cross-party compromises.
The Social Democrats decided to nominate Tanel Kiik as a candidate for the Vice President of the Riigikogu. The decision was made on Thursday, when the elections for the Riigikogu Board are taking place. Earlier, the media speculated that SDE chairman Lauri Läänemets could be the candidate.
According to good practice, the position of the second Vice President of the Riigikogu belongs to the largest opposition party. Currently, this is the Social Democrats. SDE faction chairman Lauri Läänemets says they are also inviting other opposition MPs to support Tanel Kiik.
Läänemets says that Tanel Kiik is capable of finding cross-party compromises. He is also a convinced democrat, which is very important today. Tanel Kiik is 36 years old. He has previously worked in the Riigikogu and in the Prime Minister's Office. From 2019 to 2022, he was the Minister of Social Affairs and the Minister of Health and Labour.
Tanel Kiik previously belonged to the Centre Party. He joined SDE in January 2024. In March 2024, he was elected as the Vice Chairman of SDE. Currently, the position of the second Vice President of the Riigikogu is held by EKRE MP Arvo Aller.
The elections for the Riigikogu Board will take place on March 27. The elections will start at 10 am. The SDE faction has nine MPs in the Riigikogu. After party changes, they will have at least 14 MPs.
