In August, representatives of the Estonian Olympic Committee (EOK) and the Deputy Secretary General for Sports at the Ministry of Culture, Raido Mitt, met. They discussed the construction of a new large hall. One possible location is the Ülemiste freight station located in Suur-Sõjamäe.
After the meeting, Mitt wrote to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications. He wanted to know if there are future plans for Suur-Sõjamäe. If not, whether the process of reserving the land for the large hall can begin. The large hall could be a venue for sports events, concerts, and exhibitions. Funding would come from the reduction of the remote gambling tax. However, the exact amounts will only be clear in 2026.
Mitt spoke with ERR. He said that Suur-Sõjamäe is one possible location. Paljassaar and Tondiraba are also being considered. It is not ruled out that the hall could be built in Tartu. This is desired by one of the initiators of the idea, MP Tanel Tein (Eesti 200). Mitt said: "I do not rule out that Tartu will be considered as a location for the large hall."
No final decision has been made yet. Currently, preparations are being made to initiate the project. Suitable locations are being sought. EOK Secretary General Kristo Tohver said that information is currently being gathered. They are meeting with organizers of sports and cultural events to learn about their needs. The earliest possible start date for the project is 2027.
According to the coalition agreement, there is a plan to build a large hall in Estonia. It will be able to accommodate at least 10,000 spectators. Such a hall is not financially viable for private individuals. Therefore, the state plans to create a fund from gambling proceeds. This fund would help build the hall. The construction of the hall is led by the Estonian Olympic Committee. According to the plans, the hall will be completed in 2029.
