There are many small boats on the Emajõgi River in Tartu. But there are few mooring spots. The city has over 400 mooring spots. A new analysis shows that about half more spots are needed.
Andre Purve says it’s difficult to find a spot for a small boat in Tartu. "We were lucky. But usually, it’s tricky. Most spots are narrow. Wide boats don’t fit there. They should go to the Karlova harbor. There’s a queue of 40 people there. In spring, 20 spots will be added, but 20 people still won’t get a spot," said Purve.
There are no free spots in the Rebase harbor. The Luunja and Haaslava harbors are also full. In Haaslava, 50 spots are planned to be added next spring.
The city of Tartu wanted to create new boat spots near Emajõe Street a couple of years ago. But the plan didn’t succeed. Local residents didn’t want it. It was also necessary to consider the rowing club.
Kertu Vuks said: "In the future, the most suitable spot could be near the market. Currently, we’re working on accommodating larger ships near the Ihaste Bridge."
Some people want to help themselves. The boat owners of Tartu Siili district want to build their own boat dock on the river. Andre Purve said: "We need to talk to the Environmental Board, the Waterways Board, and the city. We also need people who are willing to help with money and time."
The plan is still in its early stages. Kertu Vuks couldn’t say whether a boat dock could be built in the Siili district.
