The period of basic school final exams began on Tuesday. The exam period started with Estonian language exams. The Estonian language exam as a native language will take place on April 21. The Estonian language exam as a second language will take place from April 21 to 24. This exam will be taken by 3,334 students.
In total, 15,757 students will take the basic school final exams this year. To graduate from basic school, a student must take exams in Estonian, mathematics, and one optional subject. The optional exam can be taken in various subjects, such as biology or chemistry.
This year, 15,367 students will take the mathematics exam. The optional exam can be taken in Russian as a native language and in other subjects. The most popular is the English language exam, which will be taken by 9,685 students. Next are social studies and biology.
Starting this year, students can use supplementary materials in the Estonian and mathematics exams. If a student falls ill or cannot participate in the exam, they can take a supplementary exam. If a student scores less than 1% of the maximum result on an exam, they must also take a supplementary exam.
The exam period will continue with mathematics on April 29. Optional exams will take place from May 6 to 8. The exam tasks are prepared by the Education and Youth Board. The exam papers are graded by school grading committees.
If a student scores at least 60% of the maximum result on the Estonian language exam, they will receive a B1-level certificate.
