A Family of Foxes Settled in a Kindergarten in Tartu
Tartus Poku lasteaias on sellel nädalal tekitanud elevust end sealse paviljoni all sisse seadnud rebasepere. Tänaseks on rebasekutsikad kinni püütud, kuid rebaseema veel mitte.
This week, a family of foxes has caused excitement by settling under the pavilion at the Poku kindergarten in Tartu. As of today, the fox cubs have been caught, but the mother fox has not yet been captured.
A fox was spotted on the kindergarten grounds as early as February, but no one could have guessed that there would be more of them a few months later. The digging of the den in the kindergarten was thorough and came as a big surprise.
Over the weekend, a resident provided a video showing the den under the pavilion. The children and adults are very excited. The first thought of the children when going to kindergarten in the morning is usually: 'How are the foxes? Has the mother fox been caught?' In the evening, the children tell their parents stories about the fox family.
As of today, three fox cubs from the family have been caught, but the mother fox is still on the kindergarten grounds. According to the Environmental Board, the cubs are well-fed and friendly towards humans, which gives hope for their release back into the wild.
Employees of the Environmental Board want to take the cubs to the forest and reduce human contact so that the cubs do not become accustomed to humans. The cubs are also being fed with feathered birds to give them the skill to hunt independently. When experts believe the cubs are ready, they will be released back into the wild in the area where they were captured.
The Environmental Board hopes to capture the mother fox and bring her to the cubs. A trail camera installed in the area has shown that the mother fox is moving around the traps. This gives hope that she will eventually enter a trap.
If the mother fox is not caught, she will likely return to her usual environment, which is most probably Annelinn. The number of foxes in Tartu has increased in recent years. The city foxes have found a suitable living environment and have also produced offspring there.
