On Friday, the period began when members of the Riigikogu can submit presidential candidates. However, Ülle Madis's supporters will submit his documents to the electoral committee only on Monday.
The chairman of the Reform Party, Õnne Pillak, said there are several reasons for this. First, not all MPs supporting Madis have yet given their signatures. Second, some office work still needs to be done.
To submit a candidate, a document must be provided to the electoral committee. It must include the candidate's name, date of birth, and the signatures of supporters. The candidate must also write that they wish to run and that they meet the legal requirements.
ERR knows that Madis is supported by four parties: the Reform Party, Eesti 200, the Social Democrats, and Isamaa. In addition, some individual MPs also support him.
Candidates can be submitted until the evening of August 24. The electoral committee will meet on August 25 to register the candidates. The president will be elected in the Riigikogu on September 2, 2026.
