Estonia spent 769 euros per capita on defense last year. Among NATO member states, Estonia ranked 14th in this regard.
When looking at defense expenditures relative to GDP, Estonia was in fourth place with 3.42%. Ahead were Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia.
According to NATO data, Norway spent the most on defense - 2768 euros per capita. It was followed by the USA (2177 euros) and Denmark (2138 euros). This is the first time any country has spent more than the USA.
Other countries spending over 1000 euros per capita included Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, and Germany. The NATO average was 1212 euros.
Larger countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and France spent less. Turkey spent the least - 224 euros per capita.
Small and wealthy countries like the Nordic nations and Luxembourg were at the top of the list. Lithuania spent 862 euros and Latvia 668 euros per capita.
Albania spent the least - 133 euros per capita. Data for Iceland is not available as they do not have their own military.
These are NATO's preliminary data for 2025. Expenditures are calculated at 2021 prices.
NATO countries have pledged to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035. Additionally, they must spend another 1.5% of GDP on defense investments.
In recent years, NATO countries have increased their expenditures. This topic will also be discussed at the upcoming NATO meeting in Ankara.
