Piia Schults was a Riigikogu official. She worked there for over 30 years. In March, she was dismissed from her job. The reason was an error in the law and her comments to the media.
Schults went to court. She wants her dismissal to be challenged in court. She says: "My lawyer filed an application with the Tallinn Administrative Court." The court has not yet decided whether the case will proceed.
Schults wants a written procedure. She believes this is an important case. Perhaps it will clarify how such matters should be resolved. She says: "This is important because there has been a lot of confusion."
Schults also spoke about why she is going to court. She says: "I have to challenge this. Maybe others will find encouragement from my example." She believes that people should not be treated this way. She also wants to protect other employees.
In January, it became clear that there was an error in the new law. This error meant that online casinos did not pay taxes. In March, Schults was dismissed because of this error. The Riigikogu said that Schults made mistakes that led to the wrong law.
The Riigikogu also said that Schults' comments to the media damaged their reputation. Schults, however, believes that people have the right to know what is happening in the public sector. She says: "We are all in a small Estonia."
