Minister of Energy and Environment Andres Sutt (RE) and Minister of Regional Affairs and Agriculture Hendrik Johannes Terras (Eesti 200) said their parties support the construction of a nuclear power plant in Estonia. They spoke about this at a government press conference.
On Wednesday, the Riigikogu approved the Nuclear Energy and Safety Act. 63 members voted in favor. The Social Democratic Party was against it. Sutt said this was a small step for mankind but a big step for Estonia. Now there is a legal basis for the development of nuclear energy in Estonia.
A reporter from Aktuaalne Kaamera asked whether the Reform Party and Eesti 200 support the construction of a nuclear power plant. Sutt replied yes. He said support also came from other parties such as the Center Party and EKRE.
Sutt mentioned that the timeline for building the nuclear power plant depends on the development of small modular reactors. Fermi is currently the only company that wants to build a nuclear power plant in Estonia. One such reactor is already being built in Darlington, Canada.
Sutt said an investment decision could come in the early 2030s. By then, it will be clear whether modular reactors work well. The best location for the plant will also be chosen.
Terras confirmed that Eesti 200 supports the construction of a nuclear power plant. He said the party voted in favor of it.
