The nature observation marathon took place on June 6–7. Nearly 200 people participated. They made 10,199 observations. Two new species previously unknown in Estonia were found.
One new species was discovered by Ave Suija. It is a small ascomycete that grows on pine twig bark. The other species was found by Tõnu Ploompuu. It is an oomycete that grows on goosefoot.
The ascomycete is very small. Its name is Venturioscypha nigropila. It grows on pine twigs and near lichens. The oomycete is Peronospora variabilis. It is not a true fungus but a stramenopile.
Over 400 people participated in the nature observation marathon. They observed nature in 36 different areas in Estonia and Poland. A total of 2,683 species were found. The most species were found in Nedrema, Pärnu County — 846 species.
Andrus Jair made the most observations. He recorded 519 species. Other active participants were Kaido Nei and Tõnu Ploompuu.
Schools also participated. Over 1,100 students made 3,002 observations. They found over 1,000 species. The most active was Kohila Gymnasium.
The nature observation marathon takes place every year. It helps discover new species. The next marathon will be on June 5–6, 2027.
