On Wednesday, a large artwork arrived in Hiiumaa.
It is cylindrical and made of steel.
The artwork weighs 25 tons.
It was completed in Finland, and the cost of its transport was covered by the Centre for Defence Investments.
The journey began in Finland, where it was made. Then it was transported by trailer to the port of Hanko.
From there, it was loaded onto a ship that sailed to Paldiski South Port.
Then it was transported to Rohuküla Harbour and finally to Hiiumaa by ferry.
Hergo Tasuja, the mayor of Hiiumaa, said that the memorial had been awaited for years.
He said that it is now finally in Hiiumaa and everyone can see it.
Landscaping work still needs to be completed to finish the project.
The Hiiumaa Heritage Society has been responsible for this project.
The creation of the artwork cost a lot of money.
The state and the municipality of Hiiumaa helped fund it.
Over 1700 Hiiumaa residents participated in the War of Independence.
Hiiumaa is the only county that did not previously have a War of Independence memorial.
