Annika Arras told ERR that political parties should speed up discussions about the presidential elections. She believes that candidates should want to become president themselves.
Arras said that parties must propose candidates in July. She added that there isn't much time because the elections are early. Presidential candidates must speak before parliament already in August.
Arras noted that the current situation is strange. Some parties are proposing candidates without their consent. She said that Estonia has many people who would be suitable as president, but not all want the position.
Arras believes that a presidential candidate should want the position themselves. She said that people want to see different candidates and their ideas.
Arras thought that the Social Democrats wanted to be the first to propose a candidate. This gives them attention. She said this is good because the discussion has already dragged on for too long.
Arras said that if a candidate is strong and parties want an agreement, then it's good if the name is made public. She recalled that two years ago, parties couldn't agree, and Kersti Kaljulaid became president unexpectedly.
Arras talked about how the president's role in Estonia is rather ceremonial. But people value the position. She advised parties and candidates to speak publicly about their plans.
Arras mentioned that the Centre Party and Isamaa supported President Alar Karis. Now they must adapt to the new situation.
The Social Democrats proposed Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as a presidential candidate. Eesti 200 and the Reform Party also support Madise. The first round of presidential elections is on September 2.
