Elron wants to make the trains traveling between Tartu and Riga more comfortable.
For this purpose, funds originally intended for upgrading the line will be used.
The funds are available because a second daily departure has not yet been implemented.
Elron will receive 2 million euros annually from the state, plus an additional 300,000 euros for preparatory costs.
This money will help modernize three trains.
According to Elron, improved comfort will help increase the number of passengers on the Tartu-Riga line.
Additionally, the trains can be leased in Latvia, which will bring extra income.
The Latvian train company Vivi wants to lease diesel locomotives for three routes.
Elron has made an offer for one route because the train is available overnight.
Three trains will have their seats upgraded and power sockets added.
Carpets will also be replaced, and footrests will be added.
Plans include adding luggage storage areas and vending machines.
The cost of modernization is 756,000 euros for three trains.
Elron can start work after one train is restored in November.
Materials will be purchased in 2026, and installation will begin in 2027.
The Ministry of Climate has already agreed, but written permission is still needed.
Elron currently has permission to use four trains in Latvia.
Soon, the European Railway Agency will grant permission for three more trains.
Elron began servicing the Tartu-Riga line in January with one departure.
A second departure will be possible after the completion of the Tapa-Tartu railway.
In 2025, the Ministry of Climate and Elron signed an agreement for two daily departures.
