Prime Minister Kristen Michal said that the European Union must show strength this autumn. According to him, it is important that Ukraine receives more military aid and greater pressure is directed at Russia.
Michal stated that Estonia has provided military aid to Ukraine. This has amounted to 0.3 percent of Estonia's GDP. Estonia has also pledged to assist with the security of other countries. But the European Union should also contribute more.
The Prime Minister also said that the enlargement of the European Union must be accelerated. Ukraine and Moldova have done their homework, and negotiations with them should begin.
Michal added that Russia will only come to negotiations if we increase pressure. This requires reducing Russia's revenues, sanctioning energy carriers, and combating the shadow fleet. Additionally, Russia's frozen assets should be used for Ukraine's benefit.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the EU budget. According to him, the budget should focus on defense, cross-border connections, and the eastern border. Eastern border countries need not only defense but also economic and social support.
António Costa visited Tallinn before the start of the autumn season. He met with Estonia, Finland, and Sweden. On Tuesday, he plans to visit Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
