Madis Timpson said that next week could bring progress in the search for a new Chancellor of Justice. He discussed this with the media.
Timpson said that Ülle Madis and Alar Karis are discussing the selection of the new Chancellor of Justice. Ülle Madis is the future president. Alar Karis is the current president. Timpson has not yet discussed this topic with them.
Timpson believes that the discussions will become more concrete next week. That is when the Riigikogu will meet. He said: "Then more will happen. Currently, there are no sessions. Then things will move faster."
Timpson knows some people who might be suitable for the position of Chancellor of Justice. However, he does not want to disclose their names. He said: "This person could come from the court system. They should be independent and a good lawyer. They should want to improve life in Estonia. I don't want to mention names."
The Riigikogu appoints the new Chancellor of Justice. This requires a proposal from the president. The president must first talk to people. The Riigikogu must have sufficient support.
Timpson is the head of the Reform Party's legal working group. He said: "If there are legal questions, I discuss them with the faction. We go over the names there."
In Estonia, the Riigikogu appoints the Chancellor of Justice for a term of seven years. This requires a proposal from the president.
