Äripäev wrote that Ivo Kappet owes his business partner around 200,000 euros. This debt caused problems in real estate development. Creditors and the bankruptcy trustee suspect that Kappet's companies entered into fake loan agreements. The prosecutor's office has initiated proceedings as a result.
Ivo Kappet is a member of Eesti 200 and has been chairman of the Tallinn council faction since the summer. His predecessor Joel Jesse left the party and the council. Jesse ran on the Center Party list and secured a seat in the council.
The head of Eesti 200's Tallinn region, Aleksei Jašin, said that the party's board learned about the investigation on Thursday. The board will meet on Tuesday to hear Kappet's explanations and decide on the next steps. Jašin noted that public trust has been damaged. Therefore, it is reasonable to replace Kappet on the party funding oversight commission.
Jašin added that if the prosecutor's office charges Kappet, further steps will need to be taken. Since Eesti 200 did not secure a seat in the council in the elections, Kappet's role as chairman of the council faction also ended.
