There are many young people in Estonia who cannot find work. Employers want candidates to have experience. But how can one gain experience if no one hires them?
Keili Parts spoke in the "Impulss" program about not getting help from the unemployment fund. She finished her marketing studies but couldn't find a job. She tried to find a new direction.
Keili got a job at a kindergarten through acquaintances. She really liked this job. She wanted to get training from the unemployment fund to improve her skills. But the unemployment fund said there were too many teachers. This was in the Pärnu region.
The head of the unemployment fund, Gert Tiivas, said they can do better. He mentioned that the unemployment fund has room for improvement. He was happy that Keili found a job she likes.
Keili also talked about the problem with temporary jobs. The unemployment fund does not allow young people to work long-term with the same employer. Employers don't understand this. They want employees to stay longer to build trust.
Tiivas said there are some confusions in the unemployment fund. They are trying to fix them. From September, trial days will be possible. This is an opportunity to try out a job.
The unemployment fund also has youth advisors. They have more time to help young people.
The Minister of Economy, Liina Vahtras, said that every work experience is important. Even if the job is not a dream job, it provides experience. This will help with future salaries. The minister suggested creating better web solutions where young people and employers can connect.
The head of the Employers' Union, Hando Sutter, said that hiring young people is important. Young people bring new ideas to companies. Although training young people takes time, it is necessary.
The rector of the Art Academy, Hilkka Hiiop, talked about how the job market has changed. Universities teach various skills. These skills help young people succeed in life.
Career counselor Monika Tamla said that young people should start thinking about their future already in primary school. Schools should have career counseling. This would help young people make choices.
