The city of Tallinn made an announcement on Monday. The city wanted to commission a study about alternative locations for the Estonia Theatre extension. This was supposed to help determine how to expand the theatre without damaging the historic city.
Deputy mayor Tiit Terik said this provides an opportunity to discuss the theatre's future more broadly. Previously, the discussion was only about whether to build a new addition to the theatre at its current location. Now other options can also be considered.
But at noon came mayor Peeter Raudsepp's message. He stated that the city government has not decided to order a study of alternative locations. He ordered this commission to be canceled.
Raudsepp said this hasn't been discussed with the national opera Estonia. He believes that without a clear agreement, city money shouldn't be spent on this. The future of Estonia Theatre must be decided together with representatives of the city, state and theatre.
